This is the ideal opportunity to brush up on your parenting (or grandparenting) skills.
The first workshop, entitled ‘I Want to be Good’, introduces parents to the ABC of behaviour.
This workshop starts with the assumption that all children want to be well behaved, get things right and please their parents. Sometimes they just get it wrong, because they didn’t know what was expected and sometimes they are just reacting to a situation they didn’t understand.
The Antecedents, the Behaviour and the Consequences. We explore what triggers the behaviour and how we react to the children. We look for ways to encourage children to take responsibility for their actions. We discuss how we can change children’s behaviour for the better and for the long term.
We take a few case studies and discuss the options available to the parent or carer and consider what the consequences might be for the child’s future development.
Parents may want to discuss particular issues, e.g. homework, bedtimes, fussy eaters. These can be explored during the workshop or further sessions can be arranged for specific topics.
This workshop mainly focuses on primary school age children. A follow up session, ‘Understanding your teenager’, will be arranged at a later date and will concentrate on the teenage years.
Ideally, parents and carers should try to attend both sessions as one follows naturally from the other. It is also an opportunity to meet other parents and share experiences. The discussions with other parents are often the most beneficial part of the workshops. It is also advisable not to bring children to the session because it is not a good idea to talk about them in front of them.
