Our biggest Christmas party to date was held at L’ancora Tennis Club in Jávea on Sunday 7th December, attended by over 65 members and their families, mentors and GA helpers. The children enjoyed party games organised by Andre, ate lots of wonderful party food and were finally treated to a visit by Santa who, assisted by his helper ‘Fairy Nuff’, distributed presents to everyone. Meanwhile, our single parent members were able to chat with each other and with their mentors. In addition to thanking everyone for coming and wishing them all the very best for the festive season, Tricia made a special presentation, as GA said farewell to chief mentor Ian, who is returning to the UK with his wife Brenda
In November, Ann Mather organised a fund-raising evening of ‘Eastern Delight’. More than 50 friends and supporters attended the event at the Monsoon Thai Restaurant in Jávea, enjoying a 3-course meal with wine and entertainment by singers Claire Parsons and Colin Hulmes.
It was a wonderful evening of delicious Thai food and we raised an amazing €530.
Over 4 years ago when Tricia started Guardian Angels and she began fundraising, one of her dreams was one day to hold a fundraising ball. That dream came true on Saturday 20th September at the fabulous Republic Restaurant in Dénia Marina. Organised by Linda Phillips, the ‘black tie’ event boasted a 4-course meal, including wine and water, entertainment by the talented singer Rob Sweeney, followed by dancing until well after midnight to the excellent group Strikland.
Members and their families had fun around the pool at a special day organised by GA committee member Ann Mather and hosted by her friend Ray Goldberg. There were games for the children – smack the rat and burst the balloon – as well as a bouncy castle. Ray cooked a wonderful barbecue and there was even ice cream and jelly afterwards! Sadly, we said goodbye to one of our oldest members, Nikky Bennett, who is returning to the UK with her 2 youngest children. However, a friend of GA, Ann Martin, had baked her not one but two cakes to celebrate her last event with us here on the Costa Blanca.
In June we organised a coach trip for members and their families to the Bioparc in Valencia. The weather was hot and sunny and everyone enjoyed seeing the all the animals in their very natural surroundings. One member reported later, My son said this has been the best day of his life since we came to Spain.”
Guardian Angels was proud to be recognised as one of the top 20 charities on the Costa Blanca at a special Awards Gala Ball organised by Bay Radio on Saturday 12th April. Tricia, members of her committee and some of the mentors dressed in their best ball gowns and enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Dénia Marriott Hotel and Golf Resort. You can also view a short video of the evening by clicking here.
A Spring Fair held at the Inn on the Green between Benitachell and Jávea on 19th March raised a surprising €700 for the group. The fair is an annual event, organised jointly by Inn on the Green and High Street Heaven, and all available space, both inside and outside, was busy with stalls selling everything from handbags to jewellery and cakes to swimwear as well as Angel readings and Reiki. The bar did steady business providing refreshments and the crowds were entertained by recently-launched community radio station Total FM. Guardian Angels also raised funds with a raffle and an auction.
The presentation took place on March 1st to Margaret Lewis for her wonderful counselling service to Guardian Angels members over the past 3 years. Margaret and her family leave later this year to live in the UK. We are sorry to see her go and wish her all the best for the future. Margaret was presented with a bouquet, a crystal angel and a Guardian Angels pen. She is seen here with some of our members. Margaret said, “It has been a privilege to work with these amazing ladies and for such a fantastic charity. I will so miss you all.”
